Daylongs, classes, and benefits are usually held in the lower community meditation hall, and occasionally or in the upper meditation hall when there is not a residential retreat in progress. Unless otherwise noted, all daylongs are suitable for beginning and experienced meditators and include basic instructions. Spirit Rock is wheelchair accessible. If you have any other access needs, please call ahead.
A $10 per car parking fee is charged only for the Monday night class (no charge for three in a car). See Monday Night Carpooling for additional information on carpool lot locations and meeting times. It's not mandatory at other times, but we urge you to carpool whenever possible.
For those new to insight meditation, beginning classes are available. These cover much the same ground as the daylong retreats, but in an evening class format. Regular ongoing classes are also held for those students who have attended either a vipassana retreat or a beginning meditation class. Most groups usually begin with a 45-minute period of silent meditation. (As the groups are intended for people with previous meditation experience, minimal instruction is given.) A stretching break and an evening talk typically follow the sitting. There are classes offered though out the Greater Bay Area with Spirit Rock teachers.
There is a $5 fee to attend most classes at Spirit Rock. The Monday Night class fee is $8. This money goes toward keeping the doors open at Spirit Rock. The cost for most daylong events is $45 per day, or $50 with lunch, and sometimes $50 per day without lunch. Spirit Rock's intention is to make these teachings accessible to everyone. Daylong fees are a major source of operating income and are kept as low as possible. For those who cannot afford the daylong fee, a flexible work exchange program is available. To learn more about this, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 415-488-0164 x224. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, except for benefit events.
The teaching is done by donation, which can be made at the end of class. (See dana.) There is no need to pre-register for the weekly classes, and except for Monday night, no need to carpool.
